Mandy Jane Torkington, of Edgeley, Stockport, died on Wednesday, 29 november 2006 shortly after a collision with a police van going through a red light in Baguley. She had celebrated her 37th birthday a week earlier.
Mandy's parents, two brothers and two sisters paid tribute to her and praised her cheerful nature.
They said: "We are absolutely devastated. Mandy was outgoing and fun-loving and people loved her sense of humour, her honesty and the fact she would stand up for what she believed in.
"She had a strong faith in God and was also devoted to her pet cat, Shiraz."
Mandy, who worked as a nurse at Wythenshawe Hospital, is thought to have been driving home from there when the crash happened. She was rushed back to Wythenshawe, where colleagues battled in vain to save her.
The accident happened at about 9.30pm at the junction of Altrincham Road and Hall Lane.
The van was responding to an emergency call and had its siren on and lights flashing when it was involved in the crash with Mandy's Citroen Saxo.
Police said a bronze-coloured hatchback turned right onto Altrincham Road as the police van approached the junction and Mandy's car then followed closely behind and there was a collision.
Eyewitnesses told how her car came to a standstill on a fence across the road. The van ended up in bushes near the entrance to Wythenshawe Park.
A female officer who was alone in the police van suffered minor injuries and shock.

Marathon
Hi Mandy
I managed to complete the marathon, in your memory.
I reckon I have raised close to 2.5 k for Oxfam.
It was pretty tough, but hope you are pleased.

Police vehicles to be fitted with IDRs
Hi Mandy
I have been thinking about you alot just recently, and missing you loads. We have heard back finally from Greater Manchester Police Authority.
The GMPA have now decided to fit all police vehicles with IDRs (black boxes) which will record the vehicle speed and drivers' responses and actions.
This would have proven your innocence and probably convicted Janet Wyn Jones -had her van been equipped.
We feel this action will now prevent further unecessary loss of life and undue suffering.
We have done this in your name, and know you would approve. Love from all the family -Mark
Sorry to hear news
I had been trying to find Mandy for some years now, we wrote for a while but lost touch after I moved house. I couldn't believe the news, my thoughts go out to her family for their loss. I met Mandy working on a campsite in the Loire Valley about 18 years ago. She filled those six months in France with so much laughter and I have never forgotten the silly jokes we used to play on Jane my co-worker, regularly putting cold stew in her shoes! All my love X
I hope she is just a little bit like you.....
Born 13 May 2008, Amanda Jane Kate. Mandy, if she has just a bit of your love for life, she won't go wrong. Will always remeber you. Ruth
My condolenses go out to the family of Mandy..
Very sadly taken..
Stay strong and stick together,
Good Night Mandy..
Sleep Tight,
R.I.P..
All My Love.

A silver thread that keeps me near
To those I love and hold so dear,
Will someday slip, and I'll swim free.
A soul afloat in a bounteous sea.
I'll also soar in maddening glee,
To places unseen by you and me.
Through darkest night and brightest day,
I'll fly to a far and magical bay.
In ethereal havens of love and peace,
My God-given life will never cease.
The passing of time will be obsolete ...
Traveling the auras, no great feat.
Don't you grieve, notice the sound
Of my songs to you with love abound.
I'll never leave you, don't you see?
I'll live with you, eternally!
I am so sorry for your loss
I remember Mandy from primary school and secondary school being a funny, kind and thoughtful person. I was so shocked when my mum told me what had happend. Julie, I have often thought of you and your family and wondered what you're up to. I just wanted to write to let you know that I am thinking of you and if you want to contact me at any point please do so......
Farewell Mandy
I first met Mandy when I picked her up from Sydney Airport many years ago, she and her travelling buddy Lorraine were surprising my Daughter Nerys who had met them in Castellane, France. The letter I had about the time and date of their arrival was very misleading with time zones, the International Date Line and so on so I rang the Airport to try to find out what time their plane would arrive but with the privacy laws they weren't too happy about letting me know... so I explained in detail. The lady on the phone then said... 9am next Monday would be a nice time for a drive to the Airport. I'd only seen a photo of Mandy and Lorraine and they'd never seen one of me but I managed to find them and smuggle them into our home so Nerys got a big surprise. Mandy and Lorraine then lived with us for many months while they worked and saved up to see a little more of Australia. It is with great sadness and shock that we heard of her accident and death... we will remember Mandy with great humour and love and dare I say not unskilled in the art of farting! cheers Pennie
